Major improvements are now underway along State Route 28 near Spooner Lake as the Nevada Department of Transportation begins construction on a new mobility hub designed to improve safety, recreation access, and environmental protection in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The project includes construction of a new transit hub, expanded parking area, and a permanent watercraft inspection station aimed at preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species into Lake Tahoe.

According to NDOT, the improvements are intended to reduce roadside parking congestion along SR 28 while creating safer access for visitors traveling through the Spooner Lake area.

The project also supports broader transportation goals in the Tahoe Basin by encouraging transit use and improving traffic flow in one of the region’s busiest recreation corridors.

Drivers traveling through the area should expect reduced speed limits, traffic shifts, and minor delays during construction, which is expected to continue through fall 2027.

Officials say the permanent watercraft inspection station will play an important role in protecting Lake Tahoe from invasive species that can damage water quality, wildlife habitat, and recreation areas.

The SR 28 improvements are part of ongoing regional efforts to balance growing visitor demand with environmental preservation and public safety around Lake Tahoe.
